RYA LEVEL 1 – Start Sailing

Introducing you to sailing with all you need to know to get afloat under supervision. During the course, you’ll learn how to sail in any direction and gain an awareness of launching and recovering. Once completed, you’ll be able to sail in light winds under supervision. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA LEVEL 2 – Basic Skills

The Level 2 course sets out the foundations of sailing for you. You will need sailing skills to the standard of Level 1 for this course. Level 2 covers rigging, launching, sailing in all directions, capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge. Upon completion, you’ll be able to sail and make decisions in good conditions. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA LEVEL 3 – Better Sailing

Level 3 involves consolidating skills and trying new ones. You’ll need sailing skills to the standard of Level 2 before starting. The course covers coaching of level 1 and 2 skills and taster sessions from the advanced modules. After completing the course, you’ll be more confident in sailing skills and techniques, and ready to progress onto the advanced modules. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

Sailing Courses Advanced Modules

RYA SEAMANSHIP SKILLS

During this course, you’ll learn how to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat. You’ll need sailing skills to the standard of the Level 2 course before starting. The course covers launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard and anchoring. Upon completion, you’ll be able to handle a wide range of situations afloat. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA DAY SAILING

RYA Day Sailing teaches you passage planning and decision making for small boat cruising. The course covers preparing and planning for a day cruise, pilotage and decision making including adverse conditions. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to plan and execute a cruise, depending on conditions. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA SAILING WITH SPINNAKERS

This course teaches you everything you need to know about sailing with conventional or asymmetric spinnakers. It covers how to rig the boat, gybe and recover one type of spinnaker, either conventional or asymmetric. You’ll also discover how to sail the best possible course downwind. Upon completion, you’ll be able to use one type of spinnaker, conventional or asymmetric. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA PERFORMANCE SAILING

Performance sailing helps you improve your boat handling and confidence in performance dinghies. It includes coaching to improve your sailing, primarily in double handed boats with spinnakers. Upon completion, you’ll be able to sail faster and more efficiently in all conditions. The Course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

Youth Courses

RYA YOUTH STAGE 1

Stage 1 teaches a basic understanding of how to sail a small dinghy/multihull, with some experience of steering and handling the boat. It covers launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat and basic sailing. Upon completion, you’ll be able to steer and understand basic principles. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA YOUTH STAGE 2

During this course, you’ll learn a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor. You’ll need basic knowledge and steering ability before starting this course. The course includes basic sailing skills, ropework and collision avoidance. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to tack and control boat speed and understand basic principles. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA YOUTH STAGE 3

This course teaches you rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. This course is the youth equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme. The course covers rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory. Upon completion, you’ll be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.

RYA YOUTH STAGE 4

Stage 4 teaches you to sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat. It covers rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats, recovering a man overboard. Upon completion, you can launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions. The course is run over two days or four shorter sessions.
